Travels to Cloiseters

Notre-Dame Villeneuve-lez-Avignon

The Pontifical Court in Avignon, across the river, was the impetus for expansion of Villeneuve. Several of the popes of Avignon even established their residences, palaces, Villeneuve. There was a rivalry of foundation of convents of churches and works of all kinds between the two centres.

The collegiate church was completed by the bell tower-belfry in 1362.

The cloister was built in 1336. There are large arches, all reminiscent of those found in the oldest part of the Palace of the Popes in Avignon. Despite the big construction, the cloister is relatively small, with four very well-preserved galleries.
