The church and monastery dates back to 1268 when it was under the order of Cistercian monks. But they abandoned the church in 1276. In 1439 the church was given to Frali Minori Frascescani and became an important religious centre. In the 1720s the bell towers were added, and in 1820 the church was reconstructed.
The church, however, had a rather unpleasant ending. The nuns almost killed the Abbess and the Pope intervened. The church was dismantled for its value as construction materials, closed and used as a shed for horses.
The entrance to the 13th Century cloisters is to the right of the church. The complex was heavily bombed in World War II, reconstruction took place in 1959 and 1963. Historical documents note the significant damage to the frescoes that were along the walls of the galleries. Today, there are small segments remaining.
