The church dates back to the 12th Century, and was left abandoned and then, a decades later, active when the Servants of Mary settled in Viterbo and dedicated the church to the Madonna della Verità. The Gothic cloisters of S. Maria della Verita, located outside the town walls are strikingly beautiful.
Due to the influence of Cardinal Capocci, who belonged to the Cistercian order, who later transferred his fa ors to the new and more popular Dominician order (1220), Viterbo became one of the greatest monastic centres in Italy in the first half of the 13th Century.
The Civic Museum, Luigi Rossi Danielli, is housed on the premises of the convent which is annexed to the church, and accessible through the cloisters. Throughout the cloister galleries are sculptures and sarcophagus.
